Speech therapy, also known as speech-language pathology, addresses communication difficulties that may affect speech production or language processing.
Speech Therapy is beneficial for children with developmental delays, difficulty with articulation, language disorders, or stuttering and adults with stroke-related speech or language impairments, voice disorders, or difficulties with swallowing. Other conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, and cognitive impairments can also benefit from Speech Therapy.
Children who have trouble understanding what others say (receptive language) or difficulty sharing their thoughts (expressive language) may have a language disorder. Children who have trouble producing speech sounds correctly or who hesitate or stutter when talking may have a speech disorder.
Within the first 3 years, when the brain is developing and maturing, is the most intensive period for acquiring speech and language skills. While children vary signficiantly in their individual development of speech and language skills, they genrally follow a natural progression or timetable. It is posible to observe challenges with these milestones for the normal development of speech and language skills from birth to 5 years of age.
Speech Therapy generally follows a path of evaluation, development of an individualized therapy plan, one-on-one therapy sessions (in-person or virtual), and self-practice to reinforce therapy strategies.
The length of time for effective Speech Therapy varies signficiantly depending on individual's needs. Some individuals may require shorter therapy plans, where others may need longer-term therapy to achieve their goals. In addition, the frequency of therapy sessions is determined based on individual needs and goals.
